Sound sculpture inspiration: Baschet Brothers

I became interested in the idea of sound sculpture on my Art Foundation at Manchester School of Art a few years back. Before I started working with electronics and creating DIY instruments, this was the first sound sculpture I had made. I became interested in two key artists who used metal to create sounding structures: The Baschet Brothers (Francois and Bernard) who created giant metal resonators, and most famously the Cristal Baschet, striking aesthetically and beautiful sounding, also working with glass the music they created was orchestrated and less abstract however I liked the meeting of sculptural form and sound as one. I liked the idea of creating your own sculptural instruments that weren’t necessarily tuned but about the resonating material and form in and of itself.
